What is a food forest?

A food forest, also called a forest garden, is a cultivated area of edible and otherwise useful plants, arranged to imitate the structure of a natural woodland. Instead of growing a single crop in open rows, a food forest stacks many plants in vertical layers that share the same ground: tall canopy trees, a lower layer of smaller fruit trees, shrubs such as berries, herbaceous plants, ground-covering crops, root vegetables below the soil, and climbing vines that use the trees for support. Once established, such a system is largely self-sustaining and low in maintenance, because it mulches itself and builds its own soil, and the useful plants in it are not only edible but medicinal and biomass-producing as well.

The modern concept was shaped in temperate Britain by Robert Hart, who in the 1980s reworked his Shropshire orchard into a layered "forest garden" and described its seven layers. It was later expanded by practitioners such as Martin Crawford, and it overlaps closely with the tropical home-gardens that farming cultures have tended for centuries, as well as with permaculture and syntropic agriculture.

The appeal of a food forest is that, once established, it behaves like an ecosystem rather than a field. The many species support one another: deep-rooted plants draw up nutrients, nitrogen-fixers enrich the soil, flowers attract pollinators and pest predators, and fallen leaves renew fertility. Tillage, watering and weeding decline over time as the system matures and closes its canopy.

A well-designed forest garden suggests that it can: that abundance for humans and habitat for other species need not be in conflict. That reconciliation is close to the heart of our mission.

We see the food forest less as a fixed template than as a principle: grow in layers, in community, and in time. How that principle is expressed depends entirely on place. A forest garden that thrives in rainy England cannot simply be copied onto a dry Sardinian hillside; the species, the spacing and above all the water strategy must be rethought for the Mediterranean.

The build-up follows a ratio that reverses over the years. In the early period the supporting species make up most of the biomass, often around nine tenths, and the productive trees only a small remainder. At the end it is the other way round: the productive trees carry the stand, and a handful of helpers remain. This is no struggle for displacement but a planned handover. Seen that way, it also becomes clear why so much is planted at the start that is not meant to be there later: the mass is not wasted, it is consumed, into mulch, shade and soil.

The food forest in practice

At Sa Medada, near Jerzu in Sardinia, the growing areas of Project Eden are conceived as food forests rather than conventional plots. The design brings together fruit and nut trees, supporting shrubs, herbs and ground cover into layered communities, drawing on both permaculture zoning and syntropic succession so that early pioneer plants prepare shade and soil for the productive species that follow.

The central challenge is the Mediterranean summer. Building a food forest in a landscape of drought and thin soils means starting with water and shade before fruit: slowing runoff, deepening soil, and establishing hardy pioneers that make the ground hospitable. This is a project of years, and we present it as an intention taking shape, documenting honestly which species and techniques prove themselves under Sardinian conditions.
