What is rainwater harvesting?
On dry land, rain is not scarce so much as wasted. It arrives in sudden storms, runs off hard, sun-baked slopes before it can soak in, and is gone, often taking precious topsoil with it. Rainwater harvesting is the art of catching that water where it falls and persuading it into the ground, where the soil itself becomes the reservoir. Soaking it in is only one of three moves. The same body of practice also stores water deliberately, in dams and in cisterns, and distributes it along the shape of the land through keyline systems, so that a site stays workable through a drought and through a flood alike.
The most widely used tool is the swale: a shallow, perfectly level ditch dug across a slope, along the contour, with the soil piled into a low ridge on the downhill side. Rain running down the hill meets the swale, stops, spreads along its whole length, and slowly infiltrates deep into the earth. Other forms: basins, terraces, small check dams in gullies, and half-moon shapes around individual trees, follow the same principle in different shapes.
None of this stores water in a tank. It stores water in the living soil, where roots and fungi can reach it long after the rain has passed. It is among the oldest land techniques humans know, practised across the dry regions of the world for millennia.

Rainwater harvesting in practice
At Sa Medada, near Jerzu, the shape of the land guides where water can be caught. Level swales and basins, laid out to follow the slope's natural water lines, are designed to hold the heavy autumn and winter rains high on the land and release them slowly through the dry months, with trees planted alongside so their roots can draw on the stored moisture. This is patient, physical work, built up zone by zone.

What is a swale?
A swale is a shallow, level ditch dug along the contour of a slope, usually with a low mound on its downhill side. When rain runs down the slope it is caught in the swale, spread out along its length, and given time to soak deep into the ground rather than rushing away. Swales are one of the simplest and most effective ways to harvest rainwater directly into the soil.
