A landscape design approach that minimizes or removes the need for irrigation by using drought-tolerant plants, improved soil and mulch.
What is xeriscaping?
Xeriscaping is an approach to designing planted landscapes so that they require little or no irrigation beyond the water that falls naturally on the site. The word joins the Greek xeros, meaning dry, with landscaping, and it was coined in 1981 by Denver Water, the public water utility of Denver, Colorado, during a period of drought. The intention was practical: to keep gardens and public plantings attractive while sharply reducing the demand they place on limited water supplies.
The method is usually summarised as a set of principles that work together. Planning and zoning group plants by how much water they need, so that any watering can be concentrated where it matters. Soil improvement helps the ground hold moisture and support healthy roots. The plant palette favours drought-tolerant species suited to the local climate, often native or Mediterranean plants. A layer of mulch over the soil slows evaporation and moderates temperature. Where watering is still needed, efficient irrigation such as drip systems delivers it slowly and directly to the roots. Finally, the area given over to thirsty lawn is reduced or replaced. Applied together, these principles can maintain a living, planted landscape on a small fraction of the water a conventional garden consumes.

For Terra Humana, xeriscaping is valuable less as a decorative garden style than as a discipline of working with scarce water rather than against it. Much of the interest in the term online leads toward ornamental dry gardens; the foundation reads the same principles as a foundation for a productive, water-conscious landscape in which trees, food plants and ground cover recover together.
We are drawn to xeriscaping because its underlying logic — choose plants that belong to the climate, build soil that keeps water, and irrigate only where truly necessary — matches how a degraded Mediterranean site can be brought back to life. At the same time we hold the idea without exaggeration. A xeriscaped landscape is not a landscape that never needs care, and young plantings in particular need support before they can stand on their own. We regard these principles as one part of a wider restoration practice, to be tested on real ground and described honestly.
Xeriscaping in practice
Terra Humana's principal site is Sa Medada in Jerzu, in the Ogliastra region of Sardinia, where Project Eden is the foundation's first and most important undertaking. The land is dry, steep and stony, with mineral-rich soils and rainfall concentrated in short, intense winter periods. These conditions make water the decisive factor in whether anything planted here can establish.
In practice this means favouring drought-tolerant Mediterranean species, protecting the soil with mulch, and keeping any irrigation minimal and targeted, mainly to help young plants through their first dry summers. The planned approach is to combine these choices with rainwater capture and tree planting already central to Project Eden, so that scarce rain is held on the land rather than lost. Much of this remains early and developmental. Terra Humana treats it as work in progress and intends to document both what endures the dry season and what does not.
