Biochar

A stable, charcoal-like material made by heating plant matter with little oxygen, mixed into soil to improve its structure, water-holding and living activity.

What is biochar?

Biochar is what remains when plant material — wood, prunings, shells, straw — is heated to a high temperature with almost no oxygen. Instead of burning to ash, the material is transformed into a light, black, porous solid, close to pure carbon and riddled with microscopic pores. This process is called pyrolysis, and the idea is ancient: the dark, fertile terra preta soils of the Amazon were built by people adding charred matter to the ground centuries ago.

What makes biochar useful in soil is its structure. Under a microscope it is a labyrinth of tiny chambers. Those pores hold water and dissolved nutrients like a sponge, and they give soil bacteria and fungi a sheltered place to live. Worked into light, sandy or degraded ground, biochar can noticeably improve how much moisture and fertility the soil retains.

Because it is so stable, biochar does not rot away over a season like compost. Once in the soil, it stays and keeps working for a very long time.

How Terra Humana understands it

Terra Humana is interested in biochar for a practical, down-to-earth reason: water. On the dry hillsides of Sardinia, the scarce resource is not sunlight but summer moisture, and anything that helps the soil hold on to rain for longer directly helps plants survive. Biochar is one such tool, sitting alongside swales, mulch and shade.

We treat it soberly and at a small scale, as a soil-building experiment rather than a miracle cure. A key detail: fresh biochar must first be "charged" with compost or manure, or it will pull nutrients out of the soil before it starts giving them back. Used correctly, it is a way to turn woody prunings — which the land produces in abundance — into a lasting improvement in the ground itself.

Biochar in practice

At Sa Medada, near Jerzu, Terra Humana explores biochar as part of building living, water-retentive soil. Woody material from pruning and clearing can be converted into char, charged with compost, and worked into planting areas to help them hold moisture through the long dry season and to give soil life — including beneficial mycorrhiza — a foothold.

This is early, careful work, documented as it goes. What Terra Humana wants to learn and share is concrete and local: how much biochar helps a poor Mediterranean soil hold water and support the plants of Project Eden, measured honestly over time.
